More than 50 years after its release, lithium remains the top-ranked treatment for bipolar disorder, both in patient surveys and in the research. It also treats non-bipolar depression, and is the only mediation that substantially reduces suicidality in mood disorders. Lithium has a reputation for side effects, but on average it is better tolerated than most mood stabilizers, and nearly all its side effects are manageable.
