Alyssa Triolo, LCMHC
Alyssa (she, her, hers) believes that the aim of counseling is to establish a collaborative relationship between a counselor and a client in order to achieve tangible goals set forth by the client. She believes that the job of the counselor is not to give advice, but to empathetically listen to the client and bring attention to problematic patterns, inconsistencies, behaviors, thoughts and emotions in order to make a desired change in the client’s life.

Alyssa comes from an eclectic counseling theory background and enjoys matching my clients with the best therapeutic approach for them. She has experience using the following approaches:

- Motivational Interviewing
- Social Rhythm (IPSRT)
- Solution focused therapy
- Emotion focused therapy (EFT)
- Somatic Experiencing
Alyssa gained a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Wake Forest University and a Master’s Degree in Counseling from UNC-Greensboro. She joined MTC in October 2019 and enjoys her job immensely. In her free time, she likes to spend time with pets, not just her own but anyone’s pets, as well as eating food and crafting.
How do you manage stress in your own life?
“I have a lovely support system that helps me to remember to take care of myself. I actively attempt to unclench my muscles, as I hold a lot of tension in my jaw and back. I intentionally take some time to recharge, which has become indispensable to me. “
What’s a common misunderstanding people have about therapy?
“There are a few I come across often: Yes, I have a couch. No, you do not need to lie down on the couch. Yes, we can talk about your mother/dreams/what I think of Freud, but only if you feel it is important. Most importantly, my job is not to tell you what to do. I do not give advice. I do not presume to know what you should do in any situation in your life. After all: you are the expert on your own life. It would be arrogant of me to believe I know better. I can give you suggestions based on what has been helpful to others or based on scientific study, but it is up to you to decide what is best for you and enact change in your life. “
What’s your favorite book?
“My favorite book is Crime and Punishment by Fydor Dostoyevsky- I read it in high school and it just fascinated me.”
