Therapeutic approaches

Laura uses several therapeutic approaches during her daily work with clients. She draws on principles from mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy, existential therapy, and positive psychology during visits. A variety of treatments are utilized to achieve recovery from a wide variety of symptoms that include medications, natural treatments, and lifestyle changes.

Principles that guide her work include collaborating with clients’ to develop an excellent treatment plan. Also she works to empower clients’ to participate in treatment decisions to take an active role in achieving success and recovery. She also values being a Provider who exhibits trustworthiness in sharing her honest opinion about the best approaches for recovery.

Background

She graduated from nursing school at UNCG in 2002. She decided to pursue mental health as a specialty in 2005. Since that time she has become a mother of two young boys and enjoys bringing positive lifestyle approaches to her parenting role. This includes incorporating healthy dietary interventions such as omega three fatty acids, and berries to their meals that are inspired from natural treatments to boost general brain health.

How do you manage stress in your own life?

She enjoys scheduling several outings each week in nature such as a bike ride or a walk in the woods. Also makes it a priority to find time to pursue positive hobbies such as studying Spanish or drawing everyday objects.

What’s a common misunderstanding people have about mental health?

A common misunderstanding about mental health is that the treatment will change who they fundamentally are and that the only option is prescription medications. The treatment here can take many different avenues based on Provider input and patient preference. A client could be prescribed only natural treatments for example (fish oil, lavender tablets) along with targeted psychotherapy. There are also options for those who have not been able to tolerate medication such as trans-cranial magnetic stimulation.

What’s your favorite book [movie, play, sport, quote, hobbie, etc]?

A favorite book of mine that was introduced to me at a young age by my mother is called The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Schwartz. The central message is that in order to become a success, the most important tool is self-belief.

What’s something that people are surprised to learn about you?

People are often surprised to learn that my interest in psychiatry started at a young age from listening to my father talk about his experiences in the 1960’s working at Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh, NC. As a young adult I was fortunate to work there for several years before the hospital was closed in 2012.
